At Flinders Medical Centre we provide a variety of services to ensure the health and well being of newborn babies. Each year approximately 1100 babies are cared for in the Neonatal Unit. The unit has two areas, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and a Special Care Nursery.
Neonatal Intensive Care: This area has 11 cots. It is one of only two Neonatal Intensive Care Units in South Australia. Babies admitted are critically ill or very premature and require breathing support, close monitoring or intravenous feeding.
Special Care Nursery: This facility provides care for up to 30 babies. The Special Care Nursery provides incubator care, phototherapy and intravenous drip or tube feeding. The Unit has an Outreach Service assisting with the transition to home with education prior to discharge and home visiting by experienced Neonatal Nurses. Post discharge a follow up program is offered to children at risk of ongoing problems.
Visiting Hours
Parents are allowed to visit 24 hours a day 7 days per week. Visiting hours for the general public is 4pm - 8.00pm. There is a maximum of 2 visitors per baby. Parental consent required for all visitors. Only children allowed are siblings. Handout provided to parents on admission. Creche available 8.00pm - 4.00pm.
