The NICU at John Hunter Children's Hosptial one of the largest in NSW. It provides a comprehensive range of services to the Hunter New England, Far North Coast and Central Coast regions of NSW. This includes care for premature and term babies and to babies with surgical conditions, except cardiac surgical conditions.Our retrieval service is part of NSW NETS and retrieves more than 100 babies each year. We provide a range of supportive services including outreach education and clinics in rural referral hospitals throughout the region we serve. We offer a full range of antenatal counseling (in conjunction with the Foetal Maternal Medicine Unit) and postnatal counseling and follow up clinic services. As part of the Children’s Hospital most paediatric subspecialists are available on site.
The NICU at JHCH is an active research hub undertaking unit based research and contributing to a variety of multicentre research studies to help improve the outcomes for newborn babies.
Visiting Hours
Parents may visit any time. Public may visit at permission of parents and only 2 visitors per bed space at any one time. Public visiting not allowed between 1.00pm and and 3pm (Quiet time).

Ronald McDonald House provides onsite accommodation for families of children who are inpatients within the John Hunter Children's Hospital. These families need to live 100km or more away from Newcastle, 02 4921 4733

An ATM is located in the main entrance of the John Hunter Hospital opposite the information desk. Newcastle Permanent also has a branch located in the Royal Newcastle Centre.

Parking on the John Hunter Campus is managed by Kings Parking.
There is a few for parking with a lower rate for concession card holders. Weekly parking passes are available.

The Hunter NurtureGroup is held in Maitland fortnightly
NurtureTime
Miracle Babies Foundation hold NurtureTime sessions for those parents and families with a baby currently being cared for by John Hunter Children's Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This unique group time offers the chance to meet in a safe environment with other parents who have also experienced a baby's early arrival or difficult beginning. The group is run by a Miracle Babies Foundation parent support volunteer and no hospital staff are present. This is a place to share stories, make friends and ask questions in an understanding surrounding and all are welcome.
