The Newborn Intensive Care Unit provides specialist intensive care to newborn babies. It serves the people of Sydney South West, as well as being a referral centre from all over NSW. It also caters for babies born within the hospital who require specialist attention.

Staff

The unit is staffed with specialist baby doctors (Neonatologists, Registrars, and Paediatricians) and specially trained nurses to care for the babies as well as Social Workers, Physiotherapists, Speech Pathologists and Occupational Therapists. They use the latest information and technology.

Follow Up Programs

The Newborn Intensive Care Unit offers other services to families including a Social Worker and developmental follow up for some babies who have been in intensive care. Parent information sessions are provided to families whose babies have been in the nursery for some time, and topics include “Handling Your Baby”, Looking After Me”, “Taking My Baby Home”, “Feeding Baby”, and “Play and Development of My Baby”. There is a home visiting service for some babies who go home from the nursery. Hearing screening is also offered to all babies.

Occasionally babies not requiring the level of care provided by Liverpool’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit may be transferred to other special care nurseries in Sydney South West.

Quiet Room - for interviews with staff members or just for quiet time

Breastfeeding / Expressing Room - within the nursery

NurtureGroup

The South West Sydney NurtureGroup is supported by health professionals from Liverpool Hospital and is held fortnightly in Hoxton Park.

NurtureTime

Miracle Babies Foundation hold NurtureTime sessions for those parents and families with a baby currently being cared for by Liverpool Public Hospitals Newborn Intensive Care Unit. This unique group time offers the chance to meet in a safe environment with other parents who have also experienced a baby's early arrival or difficult beginning. The group is run by a Miracle Babies Foundation parent support volunteer and no hospital staff are present. This is a place to share stories, make friends and ask questions in an understanding surrounding and all are welcome.
