7 months old. Grace 7.5kg left, Jasmine 5.5kg right

When my husband & I found out we were having twins we were shocked to say the least. In the first few months of my pregnancy we were told that things were not quite right and one of the twins was not growing as well as the other twin. Dr Smolenovic at the FMU and my Obstetrician suspected Twin to Twin Transfusion. However this was not the case. The smaller twin just never grew as big as her sister.

We were told that the girls would be born early - as there was very little chance of going full term as the smaller twin was at risk. I got to 33 weeks and my girls were delivered by Caesarean on the 9/5/05.

They are now 6 months old.

Jasmine (our smaller twin) weighed 1300g and Grace weighed 2100g. Nothing prepared me for how small my girls were or how small the other babies were in the special care nursery. I was frightened of my girls due to their size. My son who is now four, weighed 4kg when born - I just didn't think I would have small babies - despite us knowing all along that our girls would be premmie, I was never prepared for my mixed feelings when I first saw the girls.

It has been hard - and I think having a complicated pregnancy and premmie babies is difficult on both mum and partner. Many people who have never had to deal with these issues just don't get it. It is hard. But we are now six months on and I absolutely adore my girls - I see what a miracle Jasmine is despite being deprived in the womb (IUGR), and although twins are lot's of work, having the girls and with them being premmie has opened my eyes to the miracle that babies really are and despite my worries they are doing fine, they will one day catch up developmentally, but for now we are all doing well.

Their smiles and laughter are enough to make the hard times disappear. The experience has been a rollercoaster but the rides is worth it.
