Model Patient Helps Save Lives

Unwell babies born at Liverpool Hospital will now be in even better hands with the donation of a state-of-the-art training tool to the unit by Miracle Babies. Miracle Babies recently donated a $27,000.00 newborn baby skill trainer which is used to assist in resuscitation training for doctors and nurses.

The Head of the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Liverpool Hospital, Dr Robert Guaran said the new newborn simulator was a big step forward in technology and allowed staff to simulate a realistic emergency situation. "Training staff to function effectively in resuscitation situations is vitally important and a big part of our ongoing education." Dr Guaran said. "With the training device, we are able to adjust the level of seriousness to train staff to cope with different scenarios. This makes training more accessible for all levels of staff, from nurses to specialist doctors. The simulator also allows us to practice assessment and treatment of patients. Staff must assess what the problem is and then decide on the most appropriate treatment for the baby." He said.

Melinda Cruz, Miracle Babies President thanked all those who contributed to the fundraising efforts. "Miracle Babies is immensely grateful to all of the people who supported us through the McDonald''s Helping Hands promotion and our Annual Ball in 2008. The generosity and support of the local community is often overwhelming and without it we would not be able to purchase such important equipment for the babies in the NICU. Thank you."'
