Miracle Babies representing families in new standards to measure and improve preterm and sick newborn health

Miracle Babies Foundation is proud to be an integral part of a newly announced set of standards that will help measure and improve the health outcomes of sick and premature babies.

The Preterm and Hospitalised Newborn Health Standard Set was recently released by the International Consortium for Health Outcomes Measurement (ICHOM). The ICHOM Standard Set for Preterm and Hospitalised Newborn Health is a guide to the outcomes that matter most to the parents of preterm and hospitalised newborns. The Standard Set includes categories for physical functioning, mental functioning, and social functioning.

Each Standard Set focuses on patient-centered results and provides an internationally-agreed upon method for measuring each of these outcomes. The outcome measurements will open up new possibilities to compare performance globally, allow clinicians to learn from each other, and rapidly improve the care families receive.

Defining these foundational set of standards to measure and improve preterm and sick newborn health was the result of hard work by a global team of healthcare professionals, researchers, and patient advocates, like Miracle Babies Foundation CEO and CoFounder Kylie Pussell, who was a parent representative for this work.

It was an honour to represent our families and a privilege to work with such an amazing and committed working group, from health professionals to other parent leaders and representatives from across the globe – all to improve the care and outcomes for our babies and families.  It has been a great experience with many learnings over the past 12 months with the working group and I look forward to continuing the work of ‘better, healthier outcomes for newborns and their families challenged by prematurity or sickness.”  Kylie said.

Healthcare providers all around the world are encouraged to start measuring these outcomes to better understand how to improve the lives of their patients.

The Preterm and Hospitalized Newborn Health Standard Set is made possible through the support of the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI).
