William, 32 Weeks

Miracle Mum Marlo shares William's story:

I was over the moon the day I found out I was pregnant, after 2 years of trying I couldn't believe that there were 2 lines! Everything was pretty smooth sailing, however, I always had this gut feeling that I wouldn't carry to term.

At 32 weeks and 3 days, I presented to my local rural hospital in an extreme amount of pain. I had continually lost consciousness during the 45-minute drive. On arrival, I had lost consciousness again and frightened the midwife who had told me to come in to be checked. I woke up on the floor in my partner's arms surrounded by nurses. They were unable to find my pulse, get a blood reading or locate William's heartbeat with the Doppler.

Upon further investigations through a bedside ultrasound, they found William’s heartbeat, however, it was only 80bpm. The OB on call that night consulted with the regional head of obstetrics who suspected I was having a placental abruption. I was rushed into the theatre for an emergency c-section. I was promptly put to sleep where. They discovered that I had had an 8cm full-thickness uterine rupture and placental abruption.

Will was born at 2143, he was resuscitated and amazingly breathed on his own. Once I was stabilised, both of us were transferred to Monash Clayton, where Will spent 48 hours in the NICU with CPAP. After that, they determined he was breathing well enough without any boost to be moved to SCN where he spent 2 and a half weeks. William is doing better than ever and sitting on the 95th percentile for his corrected age.
