Vital Support for Families with a Premature or Sick Newborn

Each year, more than 48,000 babies are born premature or sick and sadly, up to 1,000 babies will lose their fight for life. Support for these families is vital, however today many families are going through this difficult journey alone.

Having a baby born premature or sick can be life-changing, it affects the entire family. Parents who have had a premature or sick newborn are at increased risk of developing post-natal depression, anxiety and PTSD and many babies can face lifelong challenges including disabilities, developmental delays and behavioural challenges. Connecting with others who have also been through a similar experience helps these families cope with the emotional and challenging journey.

Our support services and resources are provided FREE to families nationally, offering emotional support and connection, from a threatened pregnancy, throughout their hospital stay and for years beyond.

It costs $143 to provide support to just one family through their hospital journey, and $715 to continue this support during the first year after leaving the hospital with our NurtureProgram. This includes costs for support teams, supplies, operational costs and resources for these families and hospitals.

What does Miracle Babies Foundation do?

Miracle Babies Foundation is Australia’s leading not-for-profit organisation providing much needed support for premature and sick newborns, their families and the hospitals that care for them.

By donating weekly or monthly, you can make a big difference to the lives of at least one of these families in the long-term.

$715 will provide full support to a family during the first year after leaving the hospital with our NurtureProgram. This includes costs for support teams, supplies, operational costs and resources for these families and hospitals.  .

Globally Recognised Support Program:
Our comprehensive NurtureProgram consists of;

NurtureLine: 24-hour family support line with access to a trained support team.

NurtureTime: Facilitated by qualified Miracle Babies Foundation volunteers, these support sessions operate within Australian NICU’s and online, providing vital, comforting emotional support.

NurtureGroups:Out-of-hospital play and support groups for families and carers who have experienced the birth of a premature or sick newborn. Health professionals such as speech pathologists, physiotherapists, family support nurses, social workers and occupational therapists may also attend NurtureGroups to support families.

COVID-19 UPDATE:

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, we’re adapting to the current situation and developing relevant and current support options through online platforms for families to connect with others who understand.

To ensure continued support for families, our NurtureLine (24 Hour Family Support Line) is available. To also continue to provide support for families currently with a baby in NICU or SCN during this time, NurtureTime has also temporarily moved to online support sessions.

Our family resources continue to be provided via hospitals.

Family Resources:

Miracle Babies Foundation also provides emergency care packs, NICU Survival Packs which include the NurtureGuide (a helpful information guide for families to help them through their NICU experience and beyond), memory boxes for miracle babies who have passed, along with donations of clothing and items for premature babies and the family.

Miracle Babies Foundation provides resources and services to more than 90% of NICUs across Australia.
