Your child may have a language delay if they are not meeting developmental milestones for their age or developing at a slower rate than most other children of the same age. A language delay can be receptive (understanding words and language), expressive (using words and language) or a mixture of both. These delays can be caused by hearing issues, a learning disability, oral impairment (problems within the mouth) or a development disorder. Language delays are quite common, and some children are at a higher risk of experiencing difficulties.
The risk factors are:
- being male
- being born prematurely
- having a low birth weight
- having a family history of speech or language problems
- parents with limited education
A comprehensive assessment by a speech pathologist and a hearing test can help diagnose any language disorders and intervention and therapy can be of benefit.
