NURTURE INFORMATION HUB
Congenital anomalies (sometimes called birth defects) are conditions that are present at birth. Having a child born with a congenital anomaly can bring unexpected challenges and emotions.
Some anomalies are noticed during pregnancy or at birth, while others may not be discovered until later in infancy or early childhood.
Congenital anomalies can range from mild to more serious. Some may affect physical appearance, movement, digestion, breathing, or other functions. They may occur on their own or as part of a syndrome or genetic condition.
Supporting Your Child in the Early Years
In the early years, your child may have ongoing appointments with doctors, surgeons, allied health therapists (like speech or physio), and child development teams. This can feel overwhelming, especially if your child also spent time in a neonatal unit.
It’s okay to take things one step at a time. Understanding your child’s condition and how it may affect their development, feeding, mobility, communication and play can help you support their growth and help them reach their full potential.
