Maelie, 32 weeks

Miracle mum Teagan shares Maelie's story:

In one of my first ultrasounds with Maelie the radiographer found a cesearean scar niche from my previous daughters birth. They were continuing to monitor its growth with the next few scans. At 25 and a half weeks I started to get pain where the niche was and went in for another ultrasound to check it after presenting at Forbes hospital for the pain. The next day I went to get my results and didn’t leave the hospital, until I was transferred by air ambulance to Nepean hospital in Sydney. I hadn’t said goodbye to my other daughter and my partner left the hospital to go a explain everything to her and pack our bags to join me by car that night in Sydney.

I was kept in Nepean hospital getting ultrasounds each week to determine how thin my scar was becoming and when Maelie would need to be delivered with the goal being 32 weeks.

I spent a total of 46 days in Nepean before it was time and the specialists said they needed to get Maelie out before I ruptured and we lost us both.

Maelie was born at 32+2 weeks weighing 2008g. She was taken to the NICU and had a rough start. I had been given 3 doses of steroids before my cessarean and Maelie required another 3 doses which maxed her out as her lungs collapsed in the first 48 hours and She was intubated. Maelie slowly came of CPAP but needed high flow oxygen for and extended period constantly have dsats during feeding.

We spent a total of 40 days in Nepean after Maelie was born when she was finally transferred to orange only an hour away from home and our family.

Maelie has now just turned 1 and is thriving.. she has passed all her health checks and you wouldn’t even know she had the toughest start to life.
