The Toddler Years

NURTURE INFORMATION HUB

The toddler years are a time of incredible growth, learning and discovery. Between the ages of 1 and 3, your child will become more active, curious and independent. They will learn new words, develop new skills and begin to explore the world around them in exciting ways. It can be a wonderful time, but it can also bring new questions and challenges for families.

If your child was born premature or sick, you may find yourself celebrating every milestone while also wondering if they are developing as expected. Some children catch up quickly, while others may need extra time or support. Remember that every child develops at their own pace, and progress can look different for every family.

Toddlers learn best through play, everyday experiences and loving relationships. The simple things you do each day help build your child's confidence, skills and wellbeing. Here are some ways you can support your toddler's development at home:

  • Spend time talking, singing and reading with your child every day to help build their language and communication skills.
  • Encourage active play by running, climbing, dancing and exploring in safe places to develop strength, balance and coordination.
  • Let your child practise everyday skills such as feeding themselves, washing their hands, packing away toys and helping with simple household tasks.
  • Give your child opportunities to play with other children so they can learn to share, take turns and build friendships.
  • Follow your child's interests and curiosity by exploring nature, playing with different toys, drawing, building and asking simple questions together.
  • Celebrate your child's efforts and achievements, no matter how small, and remember that learning takes time.

Every child follows their own path. If you have any concerns about your child's development, trust your instincts and speak with your child health nurse, GP or healthcare team. Early support can make a real difference and you don't have to navigate it alone.
