NURTURE INFORMATION HUB
During the toddler years, children begin to experience and express a wide range of emotions. They are learning how to communicate their needs, manage big feelings, and build trusting relationships with the people around them. It is common for toddlers to have tantrums, become frustrated, or feel anxious when separated from their parents or caregivers as they learn to cope with new experiences.
Toddlers also start to show interest in playing alongside and interacting with other children. Although sharing, taking turns and understanding other people's feelings are still developing, these early social experiences help build important emotional and relationship skills.
As a parent or caregiver, you play an important role in supporting your toddler's emotional wellbeing. Responding with patience, comfort and consistency helps your child feel safe and secure. Talking about emotions, reading books together, playing, and keeping predictable routines can all help your toddler learn to recognise and manage their feelings.
