Navigating the Workforce

Sometimes you may feel overwhelmed by your life outside the Neonatal unit.

Going to work, paying bills, taking care of other children and managing things at home is an added pressure that Dads face when their baby is in care.

Many neonatal Dads experience challenges with their work routine and obstacles for being at the hospital as much as they would like.   This may be different for many Dads, however connecting and speaking with other neonatal Dads can help provide some guidance and helpful tips when working through this with your employer.

For some going to work can be a good distraction and help Dads feel useful and providing financial income.  For others it is the last place you might want to be right now.  Every neonatal Dad will have their own unique circumstances and there is no right or wrong.

Things that you can do:

  • Ask about additional leave for special circumstances while your baby is in neonatal care
  • Speak with your manager and ask about reduced hours, flexible working hours or remote work
  • Find out if your employer offers EAP or emotional support for their staff
  • Connect and ask questions in the MBF Facebook Group Just for Dads – how can others help you?

Depending on your role and employer, speak to your workplace about flexible working arrangements, work from home options or extended leave entitlements to help make life a little easier to manage.
