NURTURE INFORMATION HUB
Parenting a toddler who was born premature or sick can bring unique experiences and challenges. As your child grows, you may still have questions or worries about their health, development, behaviour or future.
Managing medical appointments, therapies, developmental differences, childcare decisions and everyday parenting challenges can sometimes feel overwhelming. Some parents may also experience feelings of worry, guilt, stress or uncertainty about whether they are doing enough for their child.
The toddler years can also bring new challenges, such as changes in sleep, communication, independence and behaviour. Balancing your child’s needs with work, family life and your own wellbeing can be difficult at times.
Remember, your emotional wellbeing matters too. Looking after yourself helps you be there for your child.
Build a support network
Connecting with other parents who have had similar experiences can help you feel understood and less alone. Support groups, online communities and parent networks can provide emotional support, encouragement and practical ideas from people who understand your journey.
Seek professional support
Talking with a therapist, counsellor, psychologist, social worker or your GP can provide a safe space to share your feelings and learn ways to manage stress, anxiety or difficult emotions.
You do not need to wait until things feel overwhelming before asking for support.
Make time for yourself
Parenting a toddler can be busy, but making small moments for yourself can help support your wellbeing. This could include:
Nurture relationships
Strong relationships with your partner, family, friends and support networks can help you feel connected and supported. Making time for these relationships can provide comfort and encouragement during challenging times.
Sharing how you are feeling with your partner, family or trusted friends can help reduce the pressure you may be carrying. Letting others know what support you need can help them understand how they can help.
Every family’s journey is different. It is okay to ask for help, take time for yourself and prioritise your own wellbeing.
By caring for your mental health, building connections and accessing support when needed, you can continue to support your toddler as they grow, learn and thrive.
