NURTURE INFORMATION HUB
Toddlers begin using social skills every day as they learn to connect with family members, carers and other children. They develop these skills through play, everyday routines and spending time with others. Social skills include talking and listening, taking turns, sharing, making eye contact, understanding facial expressions, using gestures and learning how to respond to different social situations.
As your toddler grows, they are learning about emotions, friendships and how to get along with others. They are also starting to understand simple social rules, such as waiting, being kind and asking for help. These skills take time to develop and improve with practice.
Some toddlers find social situations more challenging than others. Children born premature or sick may be more likely to have difficulties managing their emotions, coping with change or being with other children. They may become upset more easily, have frequent tantrums, find it hard to wait their turn or struggle to express how they are feeling. This can sometimes make it more difficult to build friendships or feel confident in social settings.
Remember that every child develops social skills at their own pace. With patience, encouragement and opportunities to practise, most toddlers continue to build the confidence and skills they need to develop positive relationships with others.
