RESPIRATORY

Respiratory infections in adulthood can be less common, however in some cases they can be serious.  Common symptoms in uncomplicated respiratory illnesses include runny nose, sore throat, cough, high temperature, wheezing and aches and pains.

It is important to learn the signs of respiratory distress if you develop a more severe infection. Signs include gasping for breath, blue lips, rapid breathing, grunts when breathing or flaring of the nostrils. In these cases, where symptoms are severe, they don’t go away or you keep getting infections it is important to see a doctor or go to hospital.

In addition, paying attention to factors optimising their lung health such as good nutrition, minimising exposure to air pollution, avoiding cigarette smoke, good hygiene and being fully vaccinated should be given importance.

Adults born premature or sick should make sure their health care providers are aware of their early or sick birth.
