Christmas is the season that families and loved ones all come together. Babies who have never left a hospital might not get the chance to take part in their Christmas traditions and be part of the memories that are cherished for years to come.

While we can’t bring their babies home for Christmas, we can provide emotional support for these families at this difficult time, from those who have been through a similar journey.

Kodah was born at just 25 weeks — five days before Christmas. He spent 123 days at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide.

That Christmas Day, their family was split between two worlds: in the NICU with Kodah and trying to celebrate at home with our other children. The nurses made the day so special, creating tiny gifts and keepsakes to remember how small Kodah was on his very first Christmas.

Because of Covid restrictions, Kodah’s two big brothers weren’t allowed to visit him at all during his hospital stay. They finally met their baby brother for the first time when he was four months old.

For families like theirs, Christmas is spent juggling visiting hours, hospital monitors and moments apart, while trying to make the day magical for every child, both inside and outside the NICU.

Many of our Christmas fundraisers have hosted a humidicrib within their Christmas lights display.
