November NICU Awareness Month: Working together for babies born sick or premature

MONDAY 8 NOVEMBER 2021

NICU Awareness Month is a time to highlight the importance of Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Special Care Nurseries, and their amazing staff around Australia. Thank you for offering vital, specialised care to vulnerable newborns and making a difference to the more than 48,000 babies born premature or sick each year. 132 babies are born each day requiring specialised care, sadly today only around 1 in 3 families have access to vital support, we need your help.

World Prematurity Day is on Wednesday 17th November, and is a globally celebrated day to raise awareness of preterm birth, along with the deaths and disabilities associated, and the simple, proven, cost-effective measures that could prevent them.

Globally, 1 in 10 babies are born premature, requiring the specialised care of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) or Special Care Nursery (SCN) and sadly, prematurity is the number one cause of death for infants in Australia.

With World Prematurity Day around the corner, it's a perfect time to get together to raise awareness and funds for our most vulnerable.

Here are some ways you can get involved this year:

Join Tommee Tippee and 'Tip In' for Miracles

Longstanding supporter and Corporate Partner of Miracle Babies, Tommee Tippee, are once again calling on the community to join them to ‘Tip In’ for premature newborns, by making a donation in honour of World Prematurity Day. With the hope to raise $20,000, you could help us reach 139 more families with a baby in NICU or SCN.

A big thank you also to our community of families who shared their precious videos of their own journey, to help us continue to raise awareness, as part of this important campaign.

Thank U NICU Day

Another special day in the Miracle Babies calendar is ‘Thank U NICU Day’, taking place on Friday 26th November 2021.

This is a day for Miracle Babies Foundation and all the miracle families across Australia to thank the wonderful NICU & SCN staff for all their hard work and dedication in caring for our miracle babies.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions we unfortunately are not able to host our usual Morning Tea within Hospital NICU or SCNs, however we will still be making the day special for all the amazing staff.

Follow our Facebook and Instagram pages to see all the NICU messages of appreciation and what inspires our nurses to do what they do.
